Welcome, animal lovers around the world! Today, we bring you exciting news from Woodland Park Zoo. Batu, a 14-year-old orangutan, is on the verge of giving birth, which marks a significant event as it will be the first orangutan born at the zoo in 35 years.
Currently, Batu is approaching her delivery period, which for orangutans is approximately nine months. While exact predictions are challenging, recent physical changes indicate that the birth is near.
To ensure a smooth delivery, Woodland Park Zoo has tailored a special birth management plan for Batu. This includes regular veterinary check-ups in consultation with an obstetrician, fetal development assessments through ultrasound, a diet crafted by a nutritionist, and supplemental vitamins to maintain a healthy pregnancy.
Batu actively participates in non-invasive ultrasound sessions facilitated by the zoo’s dedicated care team. These sessions are akin to human prenatal ultrasounds, and Batu's cooperation is pivotal for its success.
Female orangutans give birth every seven to nine years, an exceptionally long interval among mammals. The infants depend entirely on their mothers for the first three to four years of nursing and development.
Currently, Woodland Park Zoo hosts four orangutans divided into two family groups, with Batu and Godek forming one. Throughout Batu’s pregnancy, the care team has been equipping her with maternal skills to prepare for a successful first-time birth experience.
